Why "the eavesdrip"?
Ever heard of eavesdropping? Well it comes from a time in England when you weren't allowed to build all the way to your property line because you had to leave room for the eaves of your roof to drip on your own property. The area became known as the eavesdrip. People would go stand in the eavesdrip and listen to what neighbors were saying: eavesdropping-- in the eavesdrip. Why do I know that? Because I am fascinated about the origins of funny sayings and words. And my Matt knows that and got me a book on it once. Most of the sayings in the book I've never heard of before so knowing where they come from isn't really interesting. But I've heard of eavesdropping before. And it's in the book.
So welcome to my eavesdrip. Probably nothing too juicy said here, but happy eavesdropping none-the-less.
Why "SB" and "Louski" and "The Bug" when you're just Leslie?
Matt (SB) and I decided if you had kids as cute as ours you would want to protect their identity, also. Just kidding, I don't know-- it just seemed like a nice way to start a blog-- with an alias. But I didn't like it for myself and not convinced I like it for anyone else, either. If you must know, Louski= Jaynie. The Bug= George. But don't kidnap them. I'm not telling anyone about SB. Matt knows and has been sworn to secrecy. It is nothing crazy or crude-- just a secret. We're allowed to have those, right?
Matt once asked if I was going to be like Google and change my blogger header to match the holidays (and honor random things like the births and deaths of people I have only sometimes heard of).
The answer is no. I will probably change a few for holidays. I will leave them up for 2-3 weeks in the hopes that 4 or 5 people see them. When I get the kind of traffic google does, then I might make it a 24 hour-only exposition.
"Naomi Uemura's" Google Tribute. I won't be having an Eavesdrip Tribute for Naomi or many others, but I'm glad to share Google's with you, SB. |
